PedDrugDose
was written by me, Bernard Pegis, MD. I first began writing
software in 1982 on the TI 99-4/A computer. I took a short course
in programming BASIC on the Apple IIe a few years later. In 1988, I
worked briefly at IBM and started working on PCs at that time.
While an undergraduate student at Thomas Aquinas College (TAC), I took
a job in their development office to help update their database
systems. After graduating from TAC, while doing my premedical
studies at Ventura College, I worked essentially full time as the
Associate Director of Computer Systems at TAC, computerizing other
offices, redesigning multiple systems and writing countless ad hoc
programs. In 1998 I started medical school at Saint Louis
University School of Medicine and developed our class's website and
also created multiple software programs for facilitating online
teaching and evaluation of medical curricula. I started my
residency in Family Medicine at Mercy Family Medicine in St. Louis, MO
in 2002 and continued developing software, though my focus moved from
medical education to preventing errors and speeding up
documentation. When I graduated from my residency in 2005, the
first version of PedDrugDose had been adopted by the residency and I'd
written my first several versions of medical encounter documentation
software. I began practicing in Racine, WI and found it difficult
to develop software due to time constraints. I was, however, able
to develop TabletNotes - an as yet unreleased program which I used
every day for documenting my encounters with patients with minimal
typing using a Tablet PC. Someday I hope to incorporate this
as an optional add-on to existing EMRs. I completely re-wrote
PedDrugDose during this time as well. I moved with my family (my
lovely wife and four adorable children) to Front Royal, VA in 11/2008
into
an environment which is ideal for raising a family and a practice (Skyline Family Practice)
which is very supportive of technological advances for patient care. |
